UCD Professional Academy has introduced flexible student payment plans and expanded digital payment options following the successful deployment of a new Stripe-powered payment solution developed by Square1.

The initiative marks a significant enhancement to the academy’s student enrolment experience, allowing learners to spread tuition costs through customised instalment plans while continuing to benefit from a streamlined online registration process.

The project was undertaken in response to growing demand for greater payment flexibility among professional learners. Previously, course fees were paid in full at the point of enrolment. The new solution enables UCD Professional Academy to offer tailored payment schedules across its course portfolio, helping make professional education more accessible to a broader range of students.

Developed by Square1, the payment infrastructure builds on the academy’s existing Stripe integration and introduces a range of new capabilities, including support for instalment payments, Apple Pay and Google Pay, alongside automated financial reconciliation.

The solution was designed to integrate seamlessly with existing enrolment and finance systems, allowing UCD Professional Academy to modernise its payment offering without disrupting established workflows.

At the heart of the implementation is a serverless middleware platform developed by Square1, which dynamically creates Stripe Checkout sessions and manages payment plan configurations. The system also leverages Stripe Billing to automate recurring payments and support revenue recovery processes where required.

Particular attention was paid to ensuring a seamless student experience. A branded transition page was introduced to provide immediate visual feedback while backend systems communicate with Stripe and validate enrolment details, helping maintain a fast and intuitive payment journey.

The infrastructure has been deployed using AWS Lambda, providing scalability and resilience while minimising operational overhead. Extensive transaction metadata is also captured throughout the payment lifecycle, ensuring payments can be automatically reconciled with UCD’s existing financial reporting systems.

Since launch, students have embraced the new payment options, with instalment plans providing greater flexibility for those investing in professional development. The academy has also benefited from smoother reconciliation processes and reduced manual administration for finance teams.

For Square1, the project demonstrates how modern payment infrastructure can improve accessibility while preserving the operational and financial controls required by large educational institutions. By combining Stripe Payments and Billing with a tailored serverless architecture, Square1 delivered a solution that supports both student needs and institutional requirements.
